Shattered Glass, Red RibbonsIn my earliest memory, I am five years old, and I am peering through the living room window at a removal van which has just pulled up next door. There is a family, unloading boxes and carrying lamps and chairs into the house. There are two girls with red-ribboned pigtails, three older boys, a father with a friendly smile, and a mother who is heavily pregnant. My own mother frowns over my shoulder and mutters to my father about the area ‘going downhill’.
